Meet the Preacher

Yes!  We are a little different!

We know, but we aren’t trying to be difficult.  If you ask us what kind of church or religion we’re part of, you probably expect us to tell you which denomination we belong to.  The problem is that we aren’t part of any denomination.   We choose not to be.

It’s not that we just like to be odd; we choose to be different for  a reason.  We want to be just Christians, nothing more, and nothing less.  That may seem like a new concept, but it’s actually an old idea.

The apostle Peter preached that those who believe in Jesus must repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38).  On that same day, “those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (Acts 2:41)  What church were they in?  There were no denominations, just God’s church.

When the apostle Paul wrote to the churches in the first century, he simply addressed his letter to “the church” in whatever city he was writing.  He didn’t specify which kind of church because there were no different kinds, just the church
(see Galatians 1:2 and I Thessalonians 1:1).

There were, however, some in Paul’s day who wanted to divide God’s church into factions named after different men.  Paul would have none of that, not even from the ones who wanted to identify themselves as his followers.  By the inspiration of God, Paul insisted that there be no divisions in the church
(see I Corinthians 1:11-13).  He required that they follow only Christ and drop the use of other names. The name of the church is not intended to identify a denomination, but rather to designate our relationship to Christ.  We belong to Christ, thus "the church of Christ" is all we want to be.

We believe it is possible for us to do the same today.  If we obey the same teaching as those who heard Peter, to what church will we be added?  If we follow Jesus Christ, is there any need to further identify ourselves?

Yes, we’re different.  But we believe we are different for a good, Biblical reason.  Find out more about why we choose to be different.  You may decide you want to be different, too!
